Why do hands glow?
The glow is something called subsurface scattering. When a light source is strong (like the sun) it can shine through certain permeable objects in the same way light shines through glass. This glow in the painting is the light diffusing through the blood vessels of the hand, creating a cool lava-like glowing effect.
You can see this right now: Turn your phone’s flashlight on and press your finger on the light!
