EDITION 000: Founder
Afraid of the Dark?
Cold hands seek Forbidden Light
We have found the Fire.

Edition 000: Founder is the first in a collectable series by my designer clothing brand, 1sin. Each Edition releases with a haiku and 3 apparel items. Each apparel item tells a story through art based off of one line of the haiku.

The Edition series focuses on telling the story of humanity’s beginnings through open-ended haikus and imagery. The first, Edition 000: Founder, tells the story of the initial revelation of humanity that they could control fire and bring light to what was previously in shadow.

This of course could also be interpreted in other ways: The first bite of the Fruit of Knowledge, Prometheus’s stolen fire, the aquatic creature’s first steps on land. The main premise: humanity, or our ancestors, sought after knowledge, sight, power, initially not even for malicious reasons, but to escape the cold. To sate hunger. To learn. To survive.

Production

We filmed the release video on a cold, windy, and rainy Seattle day at Golden Gardens. I came up with the idea for the shadow to climb out of the ocean on a trail run at Discovery Park, while looking out at the ocean. The initial though is it could thematically mimic the first fish crawling onto land (evolution), and also tie in with the haiku: dark, cold, and then of course seeking fire. Also, the first sin could be interpreted as the shadow choosing to seek light, or to leave the confines of the ocean.

It was VERY dark and cold in the puget sound, and the all-black skinsuit I bought to replicate the shadow suffocated me immediately as I went below water. If you look closely you can see me grabbing at my face; this was because the cold water had caused me to hyperventilate, but I could not breathe through the wet spandex. The suit absorbed enough water to create a plastic bag like effect not allowing air to pass through.

I was quite literally afraid of the dark in that moment.

Another casualty due to the weather was the fire. I was hoping to light and actual fire but the rain and wind caused it to become near impossible. Resultingly so, I had to create the FX for the fire in post production.

I ALSO made the music! Pretty proud of that.

Interpret the haiku as you wish, and I hope you like the shirts.
